Presenter: In this video, we'll be looking at how you can reduce stress by using meditation.

Meditation is an ancient, religious practice but today it's used by millions of people to relax and manage stress.

The first and simplest way to meditate is to find a quiet place to sit and then begin breathing slowly in and out. Count your breaths up to 10. Count one on an inhale and two on an exhale. Once you reach 10, start again.

Focus on the sensation of your breathing as you do this and if your mind wanders, don't worry, just start counting your breaths again, starting from one and going up to 10.

Another way to meditate is to do a body scan, concentrate all of your mind on each area of your body, working from the top of your head, right down to the tips of your toes, relaxing each muscle as you go.

Meditation can help to calm you down in an anxious moment but it is most useful when you practice it regularly.

Reflective Questions

Once you've watched the video, reflect on what you've learned by answering the following questions:

  • Have you ever tried meditation for stress relief before? How did you feel afterward?
  • Have you ever done a body scan before? Again, how did you feel afterward?
  • Out of the two techniques, which one do you think could help you to reduce stress the most?
