You have successfully embarked on delegation initiatives but would like to move towards empowerment. Read on to find out what an empowered team is and how it differs from other teams in the workplace. You will also get some advice on how to create the appropriate conditions to encourage empowerment in your team.

What is the difference between delegation and empowerment? Delegation is something that is controlled by the person who manages the team, whereas empowerment hands control over to team members.

The Empowered Team

The individuals in an empowered team (also known as a ‘self-directed’ or ‘self-managed’ team) are not intrinsically different to that of an average team. An empowered team, however, is one where the knowledge, experience and motivation that already exist within the team are fully utilized, as team members are given more freedom over the way in which they work. It is not the team members or team roles that are different but the team’s expectations, your expectations of their performance and the parameters in which they work.

This is done by giving team members the authority, responsibility and accountability to perform tasks in the manner that they see fit within the parameters they have been set. In this way they can achieve team and organizational goals.
