If a major incident occurs, it is important to try to remain calm and follow Business Continuity procedures where possible. The following checklist is not exhaustive, but may help you to keep track of key tasks in an emergency situation.

What to Do Immediately After the Incident

  • Evacuate the building(s) if necessary.
  • Check everyone is accounted for, e.g. employees, visitors (don’t forget to count yourself!).
  • Make sure you have a staff list and contact details with you.
  • Mobilize your appointed Business Continuity Staff.
  • Contact emergency services and your Local Authority Emergency Planning Department for advice.
  • Contact utility companies if necessary.
  • Inform the most senior staff in the organization about the incident.
  • Tell non-critical staff to go/stay home if necessary.
  • Set up a staff information helpline if necessary.
  • Put your PR/media relations plans into action (if relevant).
